Weight loss first begins with getting rid of unnecessary and fattening foods. Once you've said goodbye to the potato chips and candy bars, it's time to think beyond the kitchen limits and get down to business. First, let's begin by discussing your schedule.
- Write up a 'to-do' list and rank each task by importance. Keep your list updated as much as often as possible.
- Say 'no' whenever possible. Turn down tasks that are optional so you'll have more time to do more important things such as exercising and cooking instead of eating out. The key is to put yourself first.
- Schedule personal 'you' time. Whether you meditate for 10 minutes in a hot bubble bath or indulge in a small glass of wine, take time to unwind and relax.
- Expand your routine. On the weekends, cook different foods and freeze them for week night dinners. Pack a lunch the night before work. Share chores with others in your household. By stretching out things on your 'to-do' list, you won't be stressed and pressed for time.
- Set a realistic timeline to meet goals. These can include goals that are both big and small. This list will help keep you focused and motivated. When you achieve a goal, big or small, reward yourself for a job well done. For example, when I reach my first 5% weight loss goal, I intend to buy a new bedding set.
- Think about your meals. Plan out where, how and what you're going to eat. Instead of eating dinner in front of the TV, sit down at the table with the TV off, focus on your food and eating slowly, and enjoy the flavors and textures of your food.
- Express yourself. Whether you write in a journal or choose to blog daily, like me, expressing your thoughts and feelings will be a positive outlet to release any negativity that could result in you coping by eating unnecessary foods.
- Breath in, breathe out. Enough said.
- Maintain a clear focus. Don't be too hard on yourself. You're only human and make mistakes occasionally. It's all apart of the learning process.
- Start out simple. Instead of jumping in to an intense 45 minute cardio workout, start small by walking for 20 minutes. As your body gets use to the exercise, you can increase your routine to the intensity level of your choice.
- Wear the right gear. Choose proper workout clothing from brands such as Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, etc. Yes, they make fashionable workout gear! Also include comfortable shoes that support your feet. If you're wearing comfortable clothing while working out, you'll also feel more confident while doing so.
- Get yourself some support. And I don't mean a sports bra. Team up with friends or colleagues for group workouts. Let them know the game plane so there aren't any interruptions. Take a Zumba class, walk or go to the gym together.
- Be aware of your personal power. You are the ultimate decision maker in your life. If you are debating whether to go to the gym or not, remember that it is up to you to lace up the sneakers and go.
